Møns Klint

Last weekend Mary and I rented a car and took a long, leisurely drive thru the Danish countryside.  Our destination was Møns Klint, the Danish version of the White Cliffs of Dover in England.  Mary saw a photo online, once we saw it, we had to see them.

The trip itself was the best.  Driving thru all the small Danish towns, visiting all the churches and buildings was wonderful.  For this entry, I am going to focus on Møns Klint, I will post more photos of our entire trip later.

On the first leg of our adventure, we drove from Odense to Møns Klint, stopping in Magleby that night at the "Klintholm Bed and Breakfast".

The first leg of our Adventure

The Island of Møns

 The Klintholm B&B

And of course there was a resident dog in charge!

We got up the next morning and drove the 6km to Møns Klint.  There is a museum at the top that we visited before we went to see the cliffs.

On the way to the museum

The museum had all kinds of exhibits.  This one was how to dislodge a fish that was you should not have attempted to swallow

We found out that Denmark sits on about a mile and a half of chalk!  Chalk is made from the microscopic skeletons of coccolithophores. It takes 100 years for 1/32 of an inch of chalk to build up.  You do the math!!

The museum is on the top of the cliffs.  To get down to the shore and see the cliffs, you have to walk down some steps.  Steps, Steps, and more Steps.

But it was worth it!

The cliffs are over 400 feet tall

All chalk with a beach of flint stones, ground smooth by the ocean.

Yes, 994 steps round trip.

As we were walking, one guy was doing "laps".  He kept passing us as he RAN up and down.  Never breathing hard, never slowing down.  On one lap I asked him how many laps.  "10" he said.  9940 steps without breathing hard.   I had to resist the urge to trip him.

Next week, the rest of this adventure.
