Amsterdam

Amsterdam.  The Venice of the North.  (I always wondered why Venice was not the Amsterdam of the South, but...).  Mary and I visited this beautiful city recently.  And it is now one of my favorite places.

Our Hotel was the NH Doelen.  Built in the 17th century.  The Beatles hung out there (we seem to be following them through Europe, first Malmo and now Amsterdam!) and the venue where Rembrandt painted "The Night Watch".  It was absolutely wonderful.

Most of our time was spent just walking around this breathtaking city.

An old drawbridge gear still used

 China Town

It snowed one night.  It just made everything more beautiful

My honey in her new purple hat and scarf

 Yes, a wooden bicycle!

Mary checking out the map.  But we never got lost

Rembrandt Square. Bronze statues depicting the "Night Watch" were erected here

The one in the middle is not bronze

 Mary and her new friends

This was interesting.  A men's urinal in town.  Yup, no doors.

There were actually more bicycles here then in Denmark

They even had barges for bicycle parking

We went to the Amsterdam Flower Market.  This was all along the right side of this canal

My honey checking out the flowers

And styling in her purple hat!

And you could buy more then flowers at the market

One of the biggest highlights of our trip was going the the Van Gogh Museum.
This building was the Netherlands National museum on the way

We we not allowed to take photos in the museum, but I didn't need to.  Mary and I got to see his work in person.  I will never forget this.

We got to take a canal cruise.  I think Mary is happy here!

All along the canals were house boats

And the food was incredible!  This was the "De Cafe Waag"

We stopped a few times in the pub across the canal from our hotel

And I think the cat owned the place

 Breakfast at the hotel

With a view of the canal

And fine dining at Van Ryn Restaurant

 Cherries and Goat Cheese compote

 Steak Tartar

 Red fish with mussels

And fresh made Italian Gelato with chocolate mousse

All I can say is I need to go back to this restaurant!

And finally, Mary and I put a lock on the bridge across the canal across the hotel

I have the key.  I hope one day we can go back and find it still there
